The statement made in the January 1962 AAAS Bulletin that "it takes only 5 roentgens to kill a pine tree" was based on misinformation. Reliable data indicate that on the contrary it takes about 500 roentgens to kill a pine seedling and something like ten times as much to kill a mature pine tree. Chronic exposures of 5 to 10 r/day continued for an average of 8 months per year for 9 years will kill a large percentage of pine trees, according to experiments conducted by Arnold H. Sparrow at the Brook-haven National Laboratory.
