High-Energy Sound Associated with Fright in the Dolphin

A sound produced by the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) under conditions of fright is described and illustrated. It is suggested that a similar sound may be the basis of the long-distance alarm signal reported in other cetaceans.
