Abstract

Brown and varying lemmings of the central Canadian arctic showed changes in reproduction, mortality, and the properties of the individuals over a 4-year period of fluctuating population. These changes were not due to starvation or malnutrition, nor were there any obvious symptoms of stress. They may have been associated with changes in the behavior of the animals.
