While frequency analysis of the electroencephalogram is not unusual, relatively little examination has been performed in the time domain. Separation of the waves into the intervals of their duration above a baseline, irrespective of wave shape, has allowed a simple, numerical distinction to be made between the "eyes-open" and "eyes-closed" electroencephalogram.
