Maternal Facilitation of Sucking Drive in Newborn Lambs

Although active maternal assistance is not essential for the newborn lamb to find the teats and suck for the first time, the process is facilitated by grooming and by directional orientation of the ewe toward the lamb. Neither orientation nor grooming alone facilitated the sucking drive to any significant extent.
