Tikal, 320 kilometers north of Guatemala City, Guatemala, was the ceremonial center of the ancient Mayas. It reached the peak of its culture during so-called Classic times—that is, the 3rd and 4th centruries A.D. A widespread and still enigmatic cultural failure occurred around A.D. 900. See page 1401.
