Electrophoresis of protein (including enzyme) was conducted in a gel medium across which, transverse to the direction of protein migration, a continuous pH gradient extends. Any splitting of a resultant trace for the change of protein mobility with pH suggests both protein heterogeneity and the pH conditions under which further purification and subfractionation may best be pursued.
