By means of a photodynamic bioassay, with Paramecium caudatum, photosensitizing compounds have been demonstrated in extracts of finished drinking water in the United States. These findings are of interest in view of a demonstrated association between photodynamic toxicity and carcinogenicity. Neither the origin nor the identity of these compounds has been determined.
