Reproduction in Lizards: Influence of Temperature on Photoperiodism in Testicular Recrudescence

Abstract

The photoperiodic response of the testis in Anolis carolinensis is very temperature-sensitive. Body temperatures must be elevated to near preferred levels (about 32°C) during at least part of the daily light period for long daylengths to be effective in stimulating testicular recrudescence. High temperatures during the night, with cool days (20°C), may retard testicular growth more than do continuously low temperatures.
