Abstract

The tidal pressure fluctuations on the sea floor were read by a sensitive optical sensor that detects the rotations of a multiturn Bourdon helix. The record was analyzed in terms of the transfer functions between tidal elevations and gravitational driving. Off California, the semidiurnal tide attenuates considerably faster than the diurnal tide. Neither species satisfies the rate of decay expected from a Kelvin wave.
