Abstract

In a lecture titled "In Defense of Science" at a meeting of the American Iron and Steel Institute in New York on 26 May, National Academy of Sciences president Philip Handler presented a wide-ranging analysis of developments which made the public perceive "science and technology as a modern Janus-a two-faced god." The following excerpts are taken from a section on "The Attack on Science" and from a discussion on the environment.
