Sludges are labile putrescible materials which must undergo a heterotrophic decomposition process and be subject to humification before becoming stabilized substances. An understanding of the principles underlying these processes may give rise to better management plans for the application of sludge to land. Procedures are suggested for the evaluation of sludge stabilization rates.
