The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, is the principal funding source for biomedical research in the United States. Congress appropriated a record $5.5 billion in R&D funding for NIH in FY 1985, but under growing pressure to limit federal spending, the prospects for funding of biomedical research—and other areas of R&D—are uncertain. “R&D in FY 1986: The Outlook for the Next Four Years” is the theme of the Tenth Annual AAAS R&D Colloquium, 3 and 4 April 1985, Washington, D.C.
