Scientists—and some scientific societies, such as the American Chemical Society—are beginning to call for Ph.D. “birth control.” But the establishment—that is, scientists representing the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Sciences—has been resisting these calls, arguing instead that with broader training, Ph.D.s will be able to find rewarding jobs. A sidebar examines the impact of non-U.S. Ph.D.s on the science job market.
