San Patong, Thailand—The first large-scale tests to determine the effectiveness of the current generation of AIDS vaccines could begin in Thailand next year. The U.S. National Institutes of Health last year declined to test the same vaccines in the United States because they showed too little promise, but different cost-benefit calculations may apply in Thailand. Science interviewed leading researchers in Thailand and the West to take the pulse of the debate as Thai officials weigh whether the tests should go ahead.
