Summary

Warsaw—The election of a former Communist as Poland's president on 19 November could strengthen the hand of leaders of the Polish Academy of Sciences, who have been arguing for more power over science funding. A recent report on Polish science by an international panel of experts recommended, however, that power be consolidated in a government agency established as part of the reforms that followed the collapse of the Communist government 5 years ago.
