Summary

Recently scientists have coaxed inorganic compounds to self-assemble into a hierarchy of successively larger patterns: Atoms arranged in a crystalline lattice lead to larger walls surrounding arrays of pores and finally to bowls and spheres up to 100 micrometers across. These are the first tiny steps toward self-assembled complex objects, such as computer chips.
