Equipment Funds Suffer Heavy Cut

London—When the first details of Britain's new budget were announced last week, researchers breathed a sigh of relief: The research councils, which provide direct support for basic research, were given a small cut in real terms, which was better than expected. But they got a shock when education spending was detailed: Capital expenditures for items including science buildings and large equipment will be cut by 30% next year and more than 50% over the next 5 years.
