Summary

Democratic leaders have been using a sheaf of statistics to support their arguments for increasing federal funds for industrial research. The Republicans have been arguing that these funds should be cut; given the right economic environment, they say, corporations don't need government support. Experts who have been following these arguments say the rhetoric and statistics from both sides should be taken with a grain of salt.
