Summary

The probe that the Galileo spacecraft dropped into the atmosphere of Jupiter didn't end its career after its transmissions stopped, an hour or so after entry. Instead, it descended into ever hotter layers. Researchers have calculated its step-by-step destruction until its last remnants vaporized at a depth of 1000 kilometers, after a 10-hour plunge.
