Summary

The National Institutes of Health's clinical center—the place where intramural research is applied to patient care—got two pieces of good news this week. A review of the center's operations recommended a new structure that doesn't involve turning it over to private managers, as NIH leaders had feared. And Donna Shalala, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, said in an interview with Science that she will ask Congress for funds to construct a new building for the center.
