Russian Deal Bolsters the Space Station—At a Price

The space station scored a political victory last week, as the United States agreed to provide assistance to the cash-strapped Russian space program in return for extended access to the Mir space station and Russian assurances of on-time delivery of key components. The deal could put more pressure on the space station's already stressed budget.
