Large ice masses such as ice sheets and ice shelves change as the Earth's climate changes, and can serve as indicators of past climate variation. In his Perspective, Fahnestock discusses observations reported by Rott et al. in the same issue, which show the dramatic collapse and breakup of the Larsen Ice Shelf, off the western coast of Antarctica.
