Richard Klausner, the new director of the National Cancer Institute, has asked for a 10% cut in the institute's spending on contract research, and he is plowing the savings into extramural grants. As a result, the fraction of approved grants that will be funded should rise from 15% to 23%. He is also planning a scheme for expedited review of proposals that just fail to make the cut. These plans will be discussed by the National Cancer Advisory Board later this month.
