Chilton, Oxfordshire—The first images from the European Space Agency's Infrared Satellite Observer (ISO) have detected signs of water vapor in a planetary nebula. It is the first signature of water vapor from outside the solar system, and its occurrence along with carbon monoxide is a surprise. This is just one of several intriguing results from the first data sent back by ISO and is raising astronomer's expectations for the rest of the mission.
