Oceanography: A Fleet Too Good to Afford?

Summary

The U.S. research fleet, with three new vessels, may be the best in the world. But rising costs and tightening budgets could leave scientists high and dry. A consortium of ship operators hopes to gain business from other federal agencies that now go to sea on their own ships, while a National Research Council panel thinks there may be a better way to coordinate the nation's oceanographic assets.
