A Slippery Slope for Science

Summary

Last week the White House submitted a 1997 budget request that would add $1 billion to overall spending on civilian R&D. But buried in the fine print of the documents are projections that billions of dollars will be squeezed from many science and technology programs in the next several years, as the government inches toward a balanced budget.
