This week, the National Center for Human Genome Research at the National Institutes of Health is expected to announce six grants, totaling up to $60 million over 3 years, to begin large-scale sequencing of the human genome. Part of the money will also go to the development of new sequencing technologies. The grants will come with a strong message that all sequence data should be published quickly and that no patents be filed on raw sequences.
