Summary

Beijing—A midship propulsion system that won a patent and millions of dollars in government support but was never more than an idea in the mind of a untrained laborer is the latest celebrated case of pseudoscience in the world's most populous country. Now China's scientists are waging war on the popularity of such untested “solutions” to the country's technological problems, but they must overcome public ignorance of science as well as a self-serving bureaucracy.
