One previously reliable rule of thumb has been that magnetism and superconductivity cannot coexist peacefully. In his Perspective, Cassoux discusses a new organic superconductor that contains magnetic ions, which was synthesized by Kurmoo et al. and recently reported in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. As a result, previous notions about the interplay of magnetism and superconductivity will need rethinking.
