In the midst of a long and bitter debate on the House floor over a bill to authorize programs for several science agencies, legislators on a key spending panel quickly and quietly approved small increases for NASA, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and research at the Environmental Protection Agency. Fortunately for researchers, the overheated rhetoric was directed toward an authorization bill that is unlikely to become law, while the middle ground carved out by legislators suggests that this year's budget process may actually be much shorter and sweeter than last year's debacle.
