The Department of Energy's (DOE's) $8-billion-a-year network of laboratories is scrambling to survive budget cuts and political pressure to define missions. Ironically, the financial pressures come at a time when new facilities are providing researchers with unprecedented scientific opportunities. Can the labs reinvent themselves in time? A 2-day “war game” suggests it will be hard to head off a lab-closing commission.
