Small Labs Make Big Targets

The Department of Energy's (DOE's) nine multipurpose labs are getting most of the political attention, but it's the 17 smaller, more focused, and less well-known labs that are more likely to get swamped by the changes washing over the department. Especially vulnerable are eight single-purpose facilities with specific missions. While some labs are looking for private-sector owners, others are hoping that powerful friends in Washington will save the day.
