Geochemical signals that precede an earthquake might offer the hope of early warning and evacuation. The existence of such precursors is extremely controversial, however, as early optimism has turned into skepticism. In their Perspective, Silver and Wakita discuss new work on precursor events that was presented at a conference in Tokyo. An encouraging trend is emerging because of higher quality data and better analysis of these events.
