In a paper in this week's issue, Maldonado et al. (p. 657) report that mice lacking most of their normal complement of the transcription factor CREB exhibit attenuation of withdrawal symptoms, implicating this transcription factor in mediation of withdrawal effects. Hyman discusses these results in the context of the other biochemical changes that occur in the neurons of the locus ceruleus, a key brain area for withdrawal.
