Summary

In his first year as head of the National Cancer Institute(NCI), cell biologist Richard Klausner has shaken up the cancer establishment and begun to change the culture of the place. He has given lab chiefs more direct control of their own budgets; shifted funds from NCI's own programs into the extramural, academic research community; and is moving to make cancer genetics a major focus of NCI's work.
