Rapid growth in the capacity of Japan's scientific computer networks is paving the wayfor a host of high-profile international ventures and a growing number of collaborations within Japan and around the world. From monitoring the oceans to sequencing the human genome, this new capability has allowed Japan to make its own, unique contribution to globalscience. It has also begun to open up the traditionally isolated culture of Japanese science, forcing researchers and agencies to think in new ways about how to conduct and manage research.
