Summary

Monsoons contribute to cycles of flood and drought in southern Asia. Better forecasting of these important events will require deeper understanding of the factors that control them. In his Perspective, Sirocko discusses results presented by Clemens et al. (p. 943), who reveal new information in this issue about how past and present monsoons come about.
