A rich bone bed in northeastern China has yielded rare bird fossils, including what may be the oldest modern-looking bird. On page 1164, a team of Chinese and American paleontologists argues that the antiquity of the lineage leading to modern birds upsets the prevailing view of the stages in bird evolution.
