For the last several years, the new wave of supercomputers has consisted of clusters of workstations. Make way for piles of PCs. Demonstration machines built of 16 Pentium Pro chips and costing no more than $60,000 can run over a billion operations a second (gigaflops)—a realm of processing speed formerly open only to workstation-based supercomputers costing several hundred thousand dollars or more.
