Summary

About 100 scientists and public health experts from around the world gathered in Dakar, Senegal, last week to kick off what could become a new, coordinated program to attack the disease in Africa. Much of the impetus for the initiative came from Harold Varmus, director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and Maxime Schwartz, director of France's Institut Pasteur, who both attended the meeting. Varmus said the focus of the new initiative would be on building up research capabilities in Africa. A smaller session is expected to be held later this year to nail down funding commitments.
