An award announced last week should give a boost to researchers struggling to figure out what newly discovered genes are doing in the body. The Merck Genetics Institute is giving the biotech firm Lexicon Genetics Inc. $8 million to create 150 strains of knockout mice, using new technology the company has developed. But what should be particularly appealing to academic researchers is the promise made by the Merck institute and the company that they will be able to acquire the mice at nominal cost, no strings attached.
