Summary

Starting on 14 June, 500 recreational scuba divers will become scientists for a day. Supervised by over 100 reef scientists, this volunteer army will take to the waters at coral reefs worldwide for a rapid assessment of reef health. Organizers acknowledge that the survey will not yield detailed enough data to provide a clear picture of the health of any one reef. But by providing a global snapshot, the survey may begin to help scientists unravel what may be causing the decline of reefs.
