Summary

Robert Parson and James Faeder Chemical reactions can be affected greatly by their surroundings: Even a solvent that perturbs the reactants weakly can have a strong influence on the course of the reaction. In their Perspective, Parson and Faeder discuss results reported in the same issue by Greenblatt et al. in which ultrafast laser pulses were used to study the effects of argon atoms on the dissociation of iodine molecules. With a single experiment, the entire progress of the reaction can be observed.
