Summary

LAUREL, MARYLAND— While snapping a close look at the deeply cratered asteroid Mathilde, the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous spacecraft also gathered data showing that the asteroid is surprisingly light—suggesting that Mathilde and other asteroids are no more than loose conglomerations of flying rubble.
