Summary

The next generation of hand-held information tools--computers, cell phones, and digital assistants--will require full-color display technology more sophisticated than present appliance readouts and calculator displays. In his Perspective, Sheats discusses recent work by Shen et al. (p. 2009) in which full-color electroluminescent light-emitting devices were made from organic materials. If the manufacturing hurdles can be overcome, these organic devices may be the solution to the needs of the next generation of display screens.
