A variety of optical processes such as image amplification and filtering are possible with photorefractive materials. In his Perspective, Anderson discusses work reported in the same issue by Grunnet-Jepsen et al. in which fullerene molecules were used to create large photorefractive effects in a polymer material. By stacking several layers of this material, the authors were able to achieve high optical gain for two-beam coupling.
