BEIJING-- A 55-year-old mechanical engineer has been named president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Lu Yongxiang becomes the youngest president in the history of the academy, founded in 1949, replacing Zhou Guangzhao. Because he is an engineer rather than a basic scientist, his appointment has been controversial. It is seen as a symbol of the academy's increased focus on ties to industry and the need for greater self-sufficiency among its 123 research institutions, which employ 49,000 scientists and engineers.
