Summary

Many extracellular signals, tumor necrosis factor-a and interleukin-1 among them, transmit their signals to the genetic apparatus via the transcriptional activator, NF-kB. Maniatis summarizes what is known about this critical pathway and describes how two reports in this issue ( Mercurio et al. and Woronicz et al.) add to the story.
