Although many cosmologists have assumed that the expansion of the universe will eventually come to a halt, recent astronomical evidence suggests that it will expand forever. A pair of well-known cosmologists has now come up with a mathematical explanation for how a subatomic-sized universe can spring into existence, then transmute into an ever-expanding one--results which were reported in several British daily newspapers. But other cosmologists are not convinced.
